Valentine G. Barney letters, 1861-1865.

Civil War letters, 1861-1865, written by Valentine G. Barney of the 1st and 9th Vermont Regiments, to his wife, Maria, in Swanton, Vt. There are about 300 letters describing the battles of Big Bethel, Harper's Ferry, Suffolk, Yorktown, Newport and Newberne, N.C., and Richmond. He describes the capture of Belle Boyd, Camp Sigel, the surrender at Harper's Ferry, parole camps Tyler and Douglas at Chicago, Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas, the Army of the James, and the occupation of Richmond. Barney was in the 9th Vermont Regiment as led the first troops to enter Richmond.

Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy. She was born Martinsburg, Virginia and imprisoned for spying in 1862 and 1863. She went to England in 1864 and there married Sam Wilde Hardinge, one of the Union officers who had guarded her. After his death several years later she returned to the U.S. In 1865 she published a sensational memoir, "Belle Boyd in camp and prison". Valentine G. Barney of Swanton, Vt., was commissioned sergeant May 2, 1861 in Co. A of the 1st Vermont Regiment, and was mustered out August 15, 1861. He was then commissioned captain of the 9th Vermont Regiment, Co. A, June 14, 1862; and lieutenant colonel of the 9th Vermont Regiment, on May 24, 1863. He was mustered out June 13, 1865.
